ICAI requests extension for tax audit report submission deadline

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has submitted a request to Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for an extension of the deadline for filing tax audit reports for the Financial Year 2024–25 (Assessment Year 2025–26).

The Central India Regional Council (CIRC) of the ICAI has suggested a new deadline of 31 December 2025, citing the complexities and challenges faced by taxpayers and professionals in meeting current requirements.

Currently, the deadline for tax audit report submissions is set for 30 September, while the due date for income tax return (ITR) filings has been extended to 15 September.

However, the CIRC has indicated that this extension does not sufficiently address the issues at hand.

The staggered release of ITR forms has provided some relief, yet persistent technical difficulties with the income tax e-filing portal have hindered timely submissions.

The period from July to October is particularly demanding for taxpayers, who must manage various obligations including goods and services tax filings and compliance with company law requirements.

This overlap has complicated the timely completion of tax audits, prompting the ICAI to seek additional leniency.

In its correspondence, the CIRC outlined the operational challenges faced by both professionals and taxpayers, emphasising the need for accurate data compilation and the extensive nature of tax audits.

The proposed extension aims to create a more manageable time frame for compliance with regulatory obligations.

The letter, signed by CIRC chairman Ankur Kumar Gupta and CIRC secretary Jayendra Kumar Tiwary expresses hope for a positive response from the finance minister.

If the extension is granted, it could help ease the pressures of tax administration and improve compliance across the country, aligning with the ICAI’s role in overseeing the chartered accountancy (CA) profession.

In a separate development, the ICAI has postponed the CA examinations scheduled on 9–10 September in Kathmandu due to ongoing protests in Nepal after the government's recent ban on several social media platforms.
