The cancellation of the expansion is particularly troubling for Ireland given the intense concern about the impact of Donald Trump’s tariffs on investment in the country.
Ireland has a huge dependence on foreign corporate investment, particularly from the US, for its economic success. Those investments have boosted the government’s corporate tax revenue, giving the government huge fiscal resources.
Proposals for the Amazon Web Services site to make high-tech server racks, a form of shelving used in data centers, will not go ahead because of constraints in power networks in the area, the Irish Times said. The facility would have employed about 500 people.
Regulators have imposed curbs on new data centers in parts of Ireland because of an electricity shortage — a key concern for several multinationals based in the country.
AWS said it was “disappointed” that it wasn’t possible to proceed, the newspaper reported. It hopes to make other investments in Ireland, “if conditions allow.”
